That’s all folks…

The garden poodled along quite happily and (we admit at times) rather wildly until the late 2016 day when it was time for stalwart gardenpreneurs, best friends and neighbours, Penny Jones and Sarah van Erp to bid Waverley Park and her beautiful garden farewell. Moving out of the area has been a huge wrench, but a much needed search for space and, dare we say, the opportunity to get our hands dirty in our very own gardens.

Thanks a gazillion to all you beautiful green-fingered helpers over the years. Pictured thoughout this blog here and blazoned in our hearts forever. We couldn’t have done it with out you gorgeous souls…

Good news! Garden honoured in award ceremony

Hello! Good news my lovely friends. Our Garden in the Park was recently selected as a winner in the Special Shared Garden category of the Waverley Council Garden Awards 2015.

Many thanks to everyone who has shared their time, their equipment, their seedlings or even their positive vibes over the last 5 years. This award belongs to YOU!

It’s time to green the world!

Greening the world is a noble ambition, and a rather grand one at that. Oh well, you’ve gotta think big!

Below are a few select pics from our October working bee. We had a super nice time gardening and then enjoyed a spot of tea under the paperbark trees. Life is good!

A rainy September day in the garden

Here is a smattering of the highlights from August’s working bee… As it was pouring with rain, I was the only one mad enough to show up! OoooOOOoo I do like a bit of gardening in the rain.

Costa Georgiadis broadcasts live from the garden!

The most exciting thing happened today. I was just off to the ‪#‎waverleyparkcommunalgarden‬ to see if the peas had got hold of the new climbing frames I built yet and who should I meet…? Costa Georgiadis of Gardening Australia fame! He was doing a Periscope broadcast because he heard about the cool things we’re doing.

It’s available to view for the next 24hrs so to see it, download the Periscope app, “follow” Costa Georgiadis and view his post “Take 2: From Tennant Creek to #waverleyparkcommunalgarden. Just popping by to check the growth.” It’s pretty long, but I feature a lot from the middle on. Enjoy!

Water gardens take the beds to a new realm

Welcome to August’s foray into the healing, healthful, joyful benefits of community gardening. This Sunday we invited our followers to plant water gardens in the beds to encourage frogs, bees and butterflies, the best kinds of bugs, to pollinate and provide pest control to our ecosystem. Here’s how it went…

Emma Daniels, our workshop guru, led the day by bringing two round water gardens to embed in the middle two raised garden beds. She brought plants and compost too.

Olive helps Emma put pebbles in the bottom of the water garden.

Then it’s time for a rest.

Meanwhile the water beds are installed, planted with cress and other edibles and filled with water.

Bright ‘winter’ sun shone down a smashing 22-odd degrees and lovely friends showed up with kids and helping hands. Kareene, Ian, Owen and Annie; Lesley and Anouk; Nikki and Nick; Salla and some ‘pop ins’ Danny, Audrey, April and Daisy got down and dirty with liberal helpings of blood and bone and mushroom compost, and the planting of flowers.

Charlie and our little people were among the crew. Heidi a two year, eight month dynamo and eight month old Fred, plonked in this queer and amazing world exploring all its nooks and crannies.

He also liked the hose enormously.

Sarah, resplendent in her colourful skirt and dapper hat (that girl seriously knows how to garden stylishly!) mixed and mulched and watered and laughed with the best of them.

It was most definitely, the glorious epitome, the holistic embodiment, the very spot-on definition of Community.

It was a magical day.

Loving your home, loving your environment and sharing it with your neighbours. Rock on.

A rainy June day

It was a sole figure braving the rain showers to sew a little seed or two this month. Yes, you’ve got it, me!

Clutching my $80 worth of Bunnings vouchers (thanks for the donation Bunnings!), I picked up some little green darlings first thing on Sunday morning and scootered to the garden. For the first time EVER, I was the only person to show up for a working bee and although I love my monthly catch ups with green fingered friends, I can’t tell you how nice it was to potter about on my own in the rain.

Our new shed is just the bees knees and the fixed tap a heavenly wet spout to help the new plants bed down for some serious growing. I was pretty liberal with a packet of peas and gave some coriander, parsley, basil and lettuce a new home.

All in all the garden is looking pretty lovely. You should pop down!

Emma Daniels gardener extraordinaire pays a call

This month was the inaugural session of our quarterly gardening workshops run by Emma, of the green fingers, Daniels. The theme of the day was ‘healthy soil’ and she showed us how to test the pH of the soil and rectify it if too alkaline or acid. She brought a delightful crew of seedlings itching to spread their roots and she brought a wealth of wisdom and good ideas. The pictures can tell the story…
